Optional

AI that works on your computer

It summarizes your documents and answers your questions with the page where each detail is. It’s off by default, and your documents never leave your computer.

  • Off until you turn it on
  • Nothing uploaded
  • Works offline

What it does

What it can do for you

  • Summarizes the document

A short or detailed summary, with the pages each idea comes from.

  • Answers your questions

Ask, for example, “What’s the notice period to cancel?”, and it takes you to the page with the answer.

  • Translates and improves text

Into English or Spanish, or clearer, more formal or shorter.

  • Finds personal data

To redact it: names, ID numbers, bank accounts, phone numbers… You review the list before anything is blacked out.

How to turn it on

Turn it on in three steps

  1. Open Settings → AI

In Folio, open Settings and go to the AI tab.

  2. Choose the level

Basic for most computers, or Advanced, with fuller answers, if yours has 16 GB of memory or more.

  3. Click “Download”

Folio lets you know when it’s ready. From then on it works offline, from the AI button in the sidebar.

Don’t want it anymore? In Settings → AI, Delete the models frees up the space and turns it off.

Privacy

Your documents never leave your computer

Folio doesn’t use online AI services: the AI is downloaded once and, from then on, everything happens on your computer.

The only thing that comes from the internet

The AI itself, when you click Download. It comes from Hugging Face, a website for open AI models. Nothing of yours is sent to it.

What never leaves your computer

  • Your documents
  • Your questions and the answers
  • The summaries and the text it improves

Good to know

What it needs and what to expect

  • An ordinary computer

8 GB of memory is enough for Basic. You don’t need a graphics card, though it’s much faster with one.

  • Disk space

About 3 GB for Basic or 6 GB for Advanced. If there isn’t room, Folio tells you.

  • It can make mistakes

It’s a small AI. That’s why it cites pages: check them before you rely on an answer, especially for contracts, money or health.

  • Slow without a graphics card

A long summary can take a while. With very long documents, Folio tells you how many pages it read.

Transparency

You can always tell what the AI wrote

Folio tells you that you’re talking to an AI and marks what it writes, so you and anyone reading your text can know. Here are the technical and legal details.

Models and licenses

Folio uses open models by other authors, published on Hugging Face. Each one’s page shows who made it and its full license.

To run them, Folio includes llama.cpp and ONNX Runtime, both under the MIT license.

Exact requirements

Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, and a processor with AVX2 (most since 2013). Basic: 8 GB of memory, a download of about 3.0 GB. Advanced: 16 GB or more, about 5.7 GB. The models are stored in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Folio\models, checked against their SHA-256 fingerprint before use, and the AI runs in an isolated Windows process with no access to the internet or your files.

The text watermark

Summaries, answers and rewrites carry an invisible statistical watermark: as it picks each piece of a word (token), the AI slightly favors part of its vocabulary, depending on the previous token and a public key. You can’t tell when reading, but a program that knows the key can detect it in a text of some length. Translations and spelling corrections don’t carry it.

If you save a summary or an answer as a note in the PDF, the note also carries the subject “AI-generated (Folio)” and the key /FolioAI.

The watermark follows the “green list” scheme by Kirchenbauer et al. (2023), and it isn’t secret, so anyone can check it:

Public key
0x464F4C494F31 (“FOLIO1” in ASCII)
Gamma: share of the vocabulary favored
0.25
Delta: how much it’s favored
4.0, added to the score of each token on the green list
Seed
From the previous token: (key × 1000003 + previous token) mod 2^64, with NumPy’s generator (PCG64)
Detection
Z-score of the text’s tokens that fall on the green list. Above 4: almost certainly written by Folio’s AI.

The code is in Folio’s repository, in engine/folio_engine/aiworker.py.

How to check whether a text carries the watermark

Folio includes a command to check it, offline. You need the AI downloaded, because the watermark depends on each model’s vocabulary.

  1. Save the text in a file, for example text.txt, with Notepad.
  2. Open Command Prompt in that file’s folder and type:
    "%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Folio\resources\engine\folio-engine.exe" --ai-detect "%LOCALAPPDATA%\Folio\models" text.txt
If you installed Folio in another folder, the command is inside it, in resources\engine\folio-engine.exe.
  3. For each model you’ll see how many tokens the text has, its z score and "marked": true if it’s above 4.

It’s a statistical test: with just a few sentences it isn’t conclusive, and if the text has been heavily rewritten, the watermark weakens. If it doesn’t show up, that doesn’t prove a person wrote it.

Please don’t remove the marks: they let anyone know that a text was generated by AI.

EU AI Act

For the purposes of the EU AI Act (Article 50), Folio is the provider of these features: that’s why it tells you that you’re talking to an AI and marks what it writes.

If you publish text generated with it to inform the public on matters of public interest, the Act asks you to disclose that it was generated by an AI (Article 50(4)), unless a person has reviewed it and someone takes editorial responsibility for the publication.
