Privacy
Last updated: November 3, 2026
This is a translation of the Spanish version of this policy. In case of any discrepancy, the Spanish version prevails.
In short: Folio has no accounts, shows no ads and doesn’t collect data about how you use it. Your documents stay on your computer, including when you use the AI, which is optional and runs on your computer. This website counts visits anonymously and without cookies.
Who is responsible
Data controller: CuevasTech. Contact: contacto@foliopdf.org.
This website
Hosting. The website is served by Cloudflare. To deliver the pages and protect them from abuse, Cloudflare processes technical data from each connection, such as your IP address and browser, in accordance with its privacy policy.
Analytics. To find out how many people visit the website and what they’re interested in, it uses Matomo, installed on its own server: the data isn’t shared with anyone or used for advertising. It works without cookies, and your IP address is shortened before it’s stored. It records the page you visit and the page you came from, your type of browser, operating system and device, your language, your approximate country and whether you click the download button.
If your browser sends the Do Not Track signal or Global Privacy Control (GPC), your visit isn’t recorded.
Legal basis: the legitimate interest in knowing, in aggregate, how the website is used (Article 6(1)(f) of the GDPR). Detailed visit data is deleted after 13 months; after that, only reports with totals remain.
Cookies. This website doesn’t use its own cookies or advertising cookies, and doesn’t store anything in your browser. Cloudflare may use strictly necessary technical cookies to protect the site from abuse.
If you write to us. Emails to contacto@foliopdf.org go through Cloudflare’s email forwarding service and arrive in an Outlook mailbox, run by Microsoft (Microsoft privacy statement). They are only used to reply to you and are deleted once they are no longer needed.
Links. The Folio download and its code are on GitHub: when you follow those links, the GitHub General Privacy Statement applies.
The Folio app
Folio runs on your computer. It has no accounts, shows no ads and doesn’t send usage data or error reports: there’s no telemetry. Your documents are never uploaded to any server.
Folio only connects to the internet in these cases:
- New versions. When it opens, it asks GitHub whether there’s a new version; GitHub receives that request like any visit to a website. You can turn this off in Settings → General → Folio updates. Nothing is ever downloaded or installed without your permission.
- Signature timestamps. If you sign with a certificate and a timestamp, Folio sends the timestamp service you’ve chosen (DigiCert by default; also GlobalSign, Sectigo or one you set up) a cryptographic fingerprint: a summary a few bytes long, never the document.
- Certificate validity. When you sign or check signatures, Folio may ask the authority that issued a certificate (for example, Spain’s FNMT) whether it’s still valid. The query identifies the certificate, not the document.
- Feedback. Only if you use Send feedback: it sends the type of feedback, the text you write and the versions of Folio and Windows. It goes through a Google service (Apps Script) belonging to the author, which forwards it by email. Don’t include personal data you don’t want to share.
- AI models. Only if you turn on AI and click Download: the models are downloaded from Hugging Face. See Folio’s AI below.
- Links. Pages you open from Folio, such as GitHub, open in your browser.
On your computer. Folio stores its settings, the list of recent documents (you can clear it from the start screen), the handwritten signatures you choose to save, encrypted with Windows data protection, and a technical log with no document content, paths or passwords. If Folio closes unexpectedly, it keeps copies of documents with unsaved changes for seven days so you can recover them. The photos and pages you scan are processed on your computer (with a network scanner, Folio uses it through Windows, within your network), and their copies are deleted when the PDF is created or the dialog is closed.
Folio’s AI
Folio’s AI is optional and turned off by default. When you use it, it runs on your computer: your documents, your questions and the answers never leave it and aren’t sent to any AI service.
What is downloaded, and from where. Only if you turn on AI in Settings → AI and click Download (or, later on, Update on a model), Folio downloads the AI models, about 3.0 GB for basic AI or 5.7 GB for advanced AI, from Hugging Face (huggingface.co and its distribution servers). As with any download, Hugging Face receives your IP address and the request for the file, in accordance with its privacy policy. Nothing of yours is sent to it: no documents, no text and no usage data. Before using each file, Folio checks its SHA-256 fingerprint; if it doesn’t match the original’s, the file is deleted.
Everything else happens on your computer. Summaries, questions and answers, search by meaning, translations, text improvements, finding personal data and flattening scanned pages all happen on your computer, even offline. The AI runs in an isolated Windows process, with no access to the internet or to your files.
Where the models are stored. In %LOCALAPPDATA%\Folio\models. You can delete them whenever you like in Settings → AI → Delete the models, and they’re also deleted when you uninstall Folio (not when you update it).
How it works, what it can do, its limits and the mark on what it writes: Folio’s AI.
Your rights
You can request access to, rectification or erasure of your data, object to its processing or ask for it to be restricted by writing to contacto@foliopdf.org. If you believe your request hasn’t been handled properly, you can file a complaint with the data protection authority; in Spain, that’s the Spanish Data Protection Agency (Agencia Española de Protección de Datos, AEPD).

If this policy changes, this page and its date will be updated.
